Chapter Ten

Emma’s heart was still pounding as she left Clay in the lobby. All she wanted to do was get away to her room and be by herself. But she needed to find Carrie and Jack and tell them that Clay was planning to talk to Jack about what was bothering him.

As she walked up the stairs, Emma texted Carrie and asked where she and Jack had gone.

The reply from Carrie was almost immediate. She told Emma they were in her suite.

Emma put her phone away and was soon at her room. The door was unlocked, so she entered and found Carrie and Jack on the couch, cuddled up under a blanket, watching a black-and-white movie on the television.

Carrie glanced up at Emma and smiled. “You’re back early.”

“Can I talk to you two?” Emma asked.

“Sure.” Carrie paused the television and sat up straighter.

Jack looked like he had fallen asleep but was blinking himself awake as he looked toward Emma.

She took a seat on the only other chair in the living room and faced them.

“Clay knows something is bothering you, Jack.”

“I told you he suspected something,” Carrie said. “You’re not very good at keeping secrets.”

“Which is something you should admire about me,” Jack said, sitting up. “I hate keeping things from people. I have a horrible poker face.”

“This is important,” Carrie countered. “Clay can’t know anything about Willow until Sunday.”

“He said he was going to talk to you about it,” Emma told Jack.

“Another reason I think we should tell him.” Jack turned back to Carrie. “This is ridiculous.”

“Do you think he’ll get upset?” Carrie asked.

“Yes—I think he’ll be extremely upset.”

“Then I don’t want him to know.” Carrie stood, and the blanket they’d been using fell to the floor. “This is my wedding, Jack, and I want everything to be perfect.”

“Why does this matter so much to you?” Jack asked.

Tears came to Carrie’s eyes. “Because everything has been about Emma all year. For once, I want things to be about me.”

Emma’s mouth slipped open as Carrie turned to her. She’d had no idea her sister felt this way.

“None of it was your fault,” Carrie said, “but it has been all about you and Tyler this year. I thought that finally the attention would be off you for a few days and people would look at me. But then this happened, and it’s threatening to be all about you again.”

Pain and anger sliced through Emma as she stood to face her sister. “I wouldn’t have wished for any of the attention, Carrie. It’s been the worst year of my life. I’d trade it for almost anything.”

Carrie dashed away her tears. “I know—I’m not blaming you. I just want things to be normal for a few days. I want to be happy—to celebrate something good instead of mourn and be upset about something bad. Can you two understand that?” She looked between Emma and Jack. “Just give me a few more days. Please. It’s all I’m asking. And then I’ll let the whole thing blow up.
